Cramps are also a hot topic, and one that nobody wants to experience. Most cyclists are, however, under the mistaken idea that muscle cramps are caused by a lack of liquids. The causes are far more complex.
The most common cause is uneven physical load, usually connected with fatigue. This is why they mostly affect amateur sportspeople during an activity for which their body is not well prepared. The muscles use up the mineral reserves quickly and the mechanisms that transfer minerals to the muscles stop working. The cramps are actually a defensive reaction.
In inexperienced sportspeople, cramps can also be caused by a lack of liquids, as this leads to an imbalance of ions in the body. Getting cold, clothes that are too tight, or incorrect movements that overstrain muscles can all contribute to cramps.
It is said that magnesium is a universal cure for cramps. Magnesium does not harm our body, but it doesn’t help either. Cramps are always the result of a whole series of mistakes – uneven training loads, muscle exhaustion, cold temperatures, illness, and stress.
