Mallorca 167: the gran fondo loop over Puig Major and along the coast

Route summary:

The official Mallorca 167, the shortest of the three Mallorca 312 gran fondo courses (2025 edition GPX from mallorca312.com): 169.5 km and about 2,100 m of climbing from Playa de Muro. Between km 20 and 100 it is pure Serra de Tramuntana: Coll de Femenia, the Ma-10 under Puig Major at 868 m, the plunge towards Sóller and the coast road via Deià and past Valldemossa. After Esporles, gently rolling inland roads carry you home through Alaró and Lloseta.

For fit riders; plan 7–9 hours with stops. Refuel in Deià (km 80), Esporles (km 101) and Alaró (km 126). Outside the event you ride on open roads with traffic. The event runs each spring on closed roads (next edition 24 April 2027); registration opens on 6 October 2026.

 Cycling route summary:

Flat start: past the walls of Alcúdia (km 6) and along the bay to Port de Pollença; at Pollença (km 20) the Ma-10 starts climbing.

Coll de Femenia is 9 km at 5 % to 537 m (km 33), a wide, smooth road with five hairpins. Past the Lluc turn-off (km 38) the road rises to about 670 m, then dips to 525 m (km 47).

From Gorg Blau (km 50) the key climb: 5 km at 5.3 % past the Cúber reservoir to the Monnàber tunnel, the high point at 868 m (km 55.5). Then 14 km of hairpins down to the roundabout below Sóller (km 70) and across the tram tracks.

Coll d'en Bleda (4.2 km, 4.9 %) leads to Deià (km 80), then Coll de sa Pedrissa climbs about 6 km at 4.7 % past Son Marroig to just over 400 m. Beyond Valldemossa, Coll d'en Claret (2.8 km, 4.6 %) tops out at 498 m (km 94). Expect coaches and hire cars here.

At km 97.7 turn left onto the Ma-1100 and descend past Sa Granja to Esporles (km 101). The last 70 km roll gently via Palmanyola, Santa Maria and Alaró, over a final 260 m rise to Lloseta (km 134), then past Selva onto flat farm lanes north of Campanet and sa Pobla.

 Tourist summary:

Early on you pass the medieval walls of Alcúdia, and at km 38 the Lluc monastery, Mallorca's main pilgrimage site, lies 700 m off the route. The Gorg Blau and Cúber reservoirs have supplied Palma with drinking water since the early 1970s. From Puig Major, at 1,445 m the island's highest peak and a military zone, you drop into the orange valley of Sóller. Just before Deià, right by the road, stands Ca n'Alluny, the poet Robert Graves's house, now a museum. At Son Marroig, Archduke Ludwig Salvator's marble pavilion looks out at the pierced rock of Sa Foradada. Valldemossa is where Chopin spent the winter of 1838–39.

Tips from our guides

  • Set off early. From late morning the coastal Ma-10 between Sóller and Valldemossa (km 70–94) fills with tour coaches and hire cars, and the road is narrow with plenty of blind bends.
  • At the high point you ride through the 400 m Monnàber tunnel (km 55.5). It is lit, but switch on front and rear lights and take off your sunglasses. There is a second, shorter tunnel (about 250 m) at km 48.6, just before Gorg Blau.
  • Fill both bottles and stock up on food in Port de Pollença or Pollença (km 14–20). The next 50 km through the mountains to Sóller pass no village, only the restaurant and petrol station at Coll de sa Batalla (km 39) and a few roadside places.
  • Pack a windproof: in spring it can be cold at 868 m, and the descent towards Sóller is 14 km long. Cross the rails at the Sóller roundabout (km 70) and near Palmanyola (km 112) at a right angle; the organisers mark both as danger points.
  • Playa de Muro is on the far side of the island from our Can Pastilla shop, about an hour by car via the Ma-13. A road bike with compact gearing (34×30 or lighter) is ideal. On the flat final 35 km the afternoon sea breeze off the Bay of Alcúdia can blow in your face.

Did you know?

  • The first Mallorca 312, in June 2010, had just 199 riders, mostly from Mallorca and mainland Spain. Today the event is capped at 8,500 participants. source
  • The summit of Puig Major is a military zone: the radar base the United States built there in 1957–59 was used by the US Air Force until 1993. source
  • The Sóller tram, whose tracks you cross at km 70, opened on 4 October 1913 as Mallorca's first electric tramway. The line to the port is just under 5 km long. source

Places along the route

  1. 133 km

    Coll de Femenia

The first real climb of the day: 9 km at 5 % from Pollença on the wide Ma-10, with five hairpins and a steepest pitch of 9.4 %. At the top, 537 m, the first big block of climbing is done. About 5 km further on you pass the turn-off to the Lluc monastery.

  2. 250 km

    Gorg Blau

A reservoir in the valley between Puig Major and Puig de Massanella; together with Cúber a little further on, it has supplied Palma with drinking water since the early 1970s. Shortly before it (km 47.8) the Sa Calobra road branches off and you ride through a 250 m tunnel. During the event there is a feed station here, and the final climb to Puig Major begins.

  3. 356 km

    Puig Major (Monnàber tunnel)

At 1,445 m the island's highest peak; the summit with its radar dome is a military zone. The road tops out at 868 m by the 400 m Monnàber tunnel. Then comes a 14 km descent with views over the Sóller valley.

  4. 475 km

    Coll d'en Bleda

Right after the descent you cross the tracks of the Sóller–port tram, running since 1913, at the roundabout below Sóller, then climb again: 4.2 km at 4.9 % to 223 m. Over the top the road drops towards Deià.

  5. 580 km

    Deià

The Ma-10 runs straight through the village's main street. The poet Robert Graves settled here in 1929 and died here in 1985; his house Ca n'Alluny, right by the road at the edge of the village (km 79.5), is now a museum. The Reynés family bakery on the main street is a favourite cyclists' stop.

  6. 686 km

    Sa Foradada (Son Marroig)

Son Marroig (km 84), the estate of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, has a Carrara marble pavilion on the cliff. It looks down on Sa Foradada, a rocky peninsula with an 18 m hole worn through by the sea. During the event there is a drinks-only feed point at km 86.

  7. 794 km

    Coll d'en Claret

First you skirt Valldemossa, where Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39 in the Carthusian monastery. Then 2.8 km at 4.6 % to 498 m, the last proper climb of the day. From the top you descend towards Esporles.

  8. 899 km

    Sa Granja (Esporles)

La Granja d'Esporles has been prized for its spring since Roman times, and in 1239 Cistercian monks founded a monastery here. The manor, long a museum of rural crafts, has been closed to visitors since the estate was sold in 2022. Two kilometres later you ride down Esporles' tree-lined Passeig del Rei.

  9. 9126 km

    Alaró

A small town below the rock of Puig d'Alaró, crowned at 822 m by the ruins of Castell d'Alaró, one of Mallorca's three rock castles. The route runs along Avinguda de la Constitució past Cycling Planet, the bike café of David Muntaner, 2014 Madison world champion on the track.

  10. 10134 km

    Lloseta

A small town in the Raiguer. The Palau d'Aiamans, founded in 1634, has large gardens, and you ride right past the Oratori del Cocó, where legend says a shepherd found a statue of the Virgin in a rock hollow by the stream. From here 35 km of mostly flat roads lead back to Playa de Muro.
