Triathlon race rehearsal: Llucmajor–Porreres at race pace + brick run
Summary:
A race-day rehearsal for triathletes preparing for Challenge Peguera Mallorca (17 October 2026), the IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca or a middle or Olympic distance at home. The quiet, rolling Ma-5020 between Llucmajor and Porreres rides like a real out-and-back course: two 11.1 km blocks at race power teach you to hold your number over rises and descents, fuel in race position and turn cleanly. 60.3 km, 454 m of climbing, about 2 h 10–2 h 30 riding plus a 20–30 min brick run. The road is not closed as on race day: aero only on clear straights, hands on the brakes at every roundabout and junction.
The route:
Km 0–18.7: The first 1.7 km cross Can Pastilla to the Ma-6012 Camí de Son Fangos. Past Es Pil·larí (km 2.5), quiet asphalt lanes east of the Carretera Militar (km 3.7) and the Camí de les Barraques (km 4.8) lead to the Ma-19A at km 5.9 (the old road; the Ma-19 motorway is closed to bikes). It climbs from about 45 m to 165 m by km 11.4 (steepest at km 6–8.5): your openers go here. From km 16.0 follow Llucmajor's ring road (Ronda de Ponent, Ronda de Migjorn) to the rotonda de Can Tià Taleca (km 18.7), start of the Ma-5020, a quiet country road.
Km 18.7–29.8: Block A – 3 km flat, a 1.3 km rise to about 190 m, a rolling plateau topping out at 207 m (km 26.9), then 2.8 km down to the rotonda des Pou Nou in Porreres. Sit up early and turn by riding once round it – never a U-turn on the road.
Km 29.8–40.9: Block B – 3.3 km gently up out of Porreres, the plateau, a short drop around km 38 and a flat last 2.5 km to Can Tià Taleca.
Km 40.9–60.3: Home reverses the approach – ring road, Ma-19A (gently up to km 48.4, then down to km 53.9), Camí de les Barraques and Camí de Son Fangos to the shop (km 60.3).

From the start 60–90 g of carbohydrate per hour (two 750 ml bottles of carb drink plus gels), a sip every 10–15 min, and a gel about 20 min before T2 near the top of the Ma-19A (km 48.4), never on the descent. Use exactly the gels and drink you plan to race with – today you find out what your stomach tolerates at race pace.
Newer athletes ride Block B 5–10% lower and run only 15 min off the bike.
Strong long-course athletes add a second Can Tià Taleca – Pou Nou – Can Tià Taleca lap on the Ma-5020 (+22.3 km, 40–45 min at race power). Racing Challenge Peguera? Ride this at least 10 days out, never in race week.
Heart rate lags by 2–3 minutes, so start each block by feel (RPE 5–6 for 70.3), let it settle at 85–92% LTHR and on the rises hold the effort, not the speed. Talk test: short sentences at 70.3 pace, only a few words at Olympic pace; pace the brick run by feel, not by cycling heart rate.
Intensities are guidance – adapt them to your current fitness and to the traffic.

- Old Ma-19A only
The Ma-19 is a motorway closed to bicycles: ride only the old Ma-19A (km 5.9–16.0, on the way back km 43.9–53.9). Take your gel near the top at km 48.4, never on the descent to km 53.9.
km 5.9–16 - Stay on Llucmajor ring road
Llucmajor's centre is packed during the autumn fairs (29 September to mid-October) and the Wednesday, Friday and Sunday markets: stay on the Ronda de Ponent and Ronda de Migjorn. Keep your hands on the brakes at the roundabouts (km 16.8, 18.2 and 18.7; on the way back km 40.9, 41.4 and 43.0) and start Block A only as you exit Can Tià Taleca.
km 16–18.7 - Open road, not race course
Farm lanes and driveways join the Ma-5020: keep your head up, expect tractors and cars pulling out and cover the brakes at every junction. Aero only on clear straights with nobody ahead; ride single file, at least 12 m apart in a group.
km 18.7–40.9 - Descent to Pou Nou roundabout
The 2.8 km descent into Porreres ends at the rotonda des Pou Nou: pedal lightly, cover the brakes at junctions and never arrive at full gas – sit up and brake in time. Give way and ride once round the roundabout; never make a U-turn on the road.
km 27–29.8 - Heat and drinking
Even in autumn the midday sun in the south of the island can bite: drink 500–750 ml per hour with electrolytes. On warm days refill your bottles in Llucmajor on the way home.
- Lights after the clock change
After the clocks go back on 25 October 2026 it gets dark earlier: carry a white front and a red rear light.
- Brick run on the promenade
Run on the pedestrian promenade about 300 m from the shop, not on the road or the bike lane. Go early or late to avoid the crowds.
Tips from our guides
- Safety first: use the aero position only on clear straights with nobody ahead of you. Keep your hands on the brakes at every roundabout, on the Llucmajor ring road and at junctions. Farm lanes and driveways join the Ma-5020 – expect tractors and cars pulling out. The road is not closed as on race day: ride single file, at least 12 m apart in a group, and never arrive at the Pou Nou roundabout at full gas.
- Llucmajor's autumn fairs run from 29 September to mid-October and fill the town centre. Stay on the ring road, and use only the old Ma-19A – the Ma-19 is a motorway.
- Heat and drinking: even in autumn the midday sun in the south of the island can bite. Drink 500–750 ml per hour with electrolytes, and on warm days refill in Llucmajor on the way home. Use exactly the gels and drink you plan to race with – today you find out what your stomach tolerates at race pace.
- No power meter? Heart rate lags by 2–3 minutes, so start each block by feel (RPE 5–6 for 70.3) and let it settle at 85–92% LTHR. On the rises hold the effort, not the speed. Talk test: at 70.3 pace you can still say short sentences, at Olympic pace only a few words. Pace the brick run by feel, not by cycling heart rate. Note time and average speed for both blocks to compare next time.
- Set-up and T2: before you leave, set saddle height and set-back to your home measurements and practise riding on the drops or in the aero position. Lay out your run kit (shoes with elastic laces, cap, gel) in advance; if you'd like to leave it at the shop, ask the staff beforehand. After the clocks go back on 25 October 2026 it gets dark earlier – carry a white front and a red rear light.
