Binissalem Wine Loop: Historic Cellars, Potters and Vineyard Lanes
Route summary:
A relaxed half-day loop through DO Binissalem, Mallorca's first protected wine appellation, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana. It is 67 km with only about 350 m of climbing, all on asphalt: ideal for a recovery day, your first ride on the island or a group that wants culture as much as kilometres.
You pass through all five DO municipalities, past Macià Batle, Bodega Ribas (in the same family since 1711), José L. Ferrer (since 1931) and the restored hamlet of Biniagual. Riding time is 2.5–3 hours; allow 5–6 with a tasting or two and lunch. Refuel at Cafè Comerç in Santa Maria del Camí, Celler Sa Vinya in Binissalem or Bar Can Prim in Santa Eugènia. Book tastings ahead and sip with the ride home in mind.
Cycling route summary:
The first 10 km are flat, on familiar MCC roads: Camí de Can Alegria, Ma-19A, Ma-5013 along the irrigation channel, Camí de Sant Jordi and the old Manacor road over the Ma-15 to Camí de Cal Correu. At Es Pinaret a short stretch of Ma-3011 leads to Ma-3017 and the only real climb: 3.6 km at 3.2% to Sa Cabaneta (140 m), with one short ramp of about 8%.
Quiet lanes through Pòrtol take you to the high point, about 176 m at km 17. Camí des Jardí d'en Ferrer and Ma-3010 then drop gently to Santa Maria del Camí; on Sunday mornings the market fills the centre, so walk the bike.
From km 22 to 30 you follow Ma-13A, the old Palma–Inca road, rising gently via Consell (about 150 m) to Binissalem. Traffic is steady: ride single file. The parallel Ma-13 motorway is closed to bikes.
The lane to Biniagual is a dead end; you retrace just over 1 km. Then comes the quiet part: Camí des Ollers and Ma-3021 to Biniali, and narrow vineyard lanes to Santa Eugènia at km 43. After a short rise to about 165 m, the reward: roughly 7 km of gentle descent, mostly on Ma-3011, to Es Pinaret and flat roads home. All paved; only about 400 m of narrow service lanes.
Tourist summary:
Wine country with a long memory. Before phylloxera struck at the end of the 19th century, Mallorca had some 27,000 hectares of vines; today the appellation's cellars champion native grapes such as Manto Negro and Prensal Blanc. Start with clay, though: Pòrtol and Sa Cabaneta are Marratxí's pottery villages, where workshops still turn pots, greixonera casseroles and siurells, whitewashed clay whistles with bright brushstrokes. Santa Maria del Camí has a bell tower clad in blue tiles and a big Sunday market. Binissalem is built from limestone quarried on its doorstep and celebrates the harvest every September with the Festa des Vermar. Finish among the vines of revived Biniagual and in quiet Biniali and Santa Eugènia.

Tips from our guides
- The best days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, when every winery and café on this page is open. On Sundays Macià Batle and Ribas are closed (José L. Ferrer still runs tours at 11:00 and 13:00); on Thursdays Ribas closes at 14:30 and Cafè Comerç is shut; Celler Sa Vinya closes on Tuesdays, Can Prim on Mondays and Tuesdays. Book tours at least a day ahead.
- In Spain cyclists face the same alcohol limits as drivers: 0.5 g/l in blood, 0.25 mg/l in breath. Taste responsibly: spit, share a glass, eat and drink water before you ride on. Never carry bottles in jersey pockets; have them shipped home or collect them by car.
- Bring a lock: your bike waits outside during a 50–70 minute tour. Cellar stairs are far easier in shoes with recessed cleats (SPD), or in light shoes from your pocket, than in road cleats.
- On the Ma-13A between Santa Maria and Binissalem, ride single file and signal early before turning into winery entrances. On Sundays from 7:00 to 14:00 the market fills Santa Maria's centre, so walk the bike through; Binissalem's market is on Fridays.
- Long lunch? The sun sets around 19:30 in early October and about 18:00 after the clocks go back on 25 October. After dark Spanish law requires a white front light, a red rear light and a reflective garment on interurban roads, so pack lights.

Top of the day's only real climb and the first of Marratxí's two pottery villages; siurell whistles are traditionally bought here at the Sant Marçal fair on 30 June. The Museu del Fang (clay museum) is about 250 m off the route; check its opening hours before you go.

Pottery has been Pòrtol's trade since at least the late 19th century, and its workshops (ollers) still turn pots, greixonera casseroles and siurells. The loop's highest point, about 176 m, is right by the village.

Mallorca's oldest winery, in the same family since 1711 and now run by the tenth generation. The town that gave the appellation its name. José L. Vins Nadal is about 200 m away; the stone old town and the church of Santa Maria de Robines are about 650 m. Market day: Friday.
